Who We Are
PK Move is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to bringing the transformative power of parkour to underserved populations. We do this through educational programming, online instruction, and curriculum development.
Our Mission
To make parkour and natural movement programs accessible to people of all ages and abilities.
What is parkour?
Parkour is a movement art that teaches locomotive skills such as running, jumping, climbing, and crawling to go over, under, or through obstacles. It’s the ultimate way to creatively express the human body in an endless variety of forms.
Because of this, parkour is uniquely suited to address multiple issues in our society: lack of movement, lack of access, and falls prevention.
Lack of Movement
The rise of sedentary living in modern society has become a defining issue of our time. The negative impact such lifestyles have on individuals – physically, emotionally, and socially – is well-documented.
Traditional exercise programs, though effective in the sense that they improve general health outcomes, often fail to attract those who don’t have a specific sport or activity driving them to get fit.
Parkour can speak to these individuals like few other activities, teaching them how to enjoy movement for its own sake.
Lack of Access
Unfortunately, at a time when movement is needed more than ever, the solutions presented often present their own barriers – expensive equipment, gym memberships, class fees, etc.
This is especially true for younger children in economically-distressed environments, where affordable activities may be few and far between.
Parkour requires no special equipment and can be adapted to all environments. The only barrier is your imagination!
Falls Prevention
It’s a sad reality that, mainly due to lack of physical preparedness, many individuals will suffer a serious fall later in life. This problem has become widespread – over 34,000 individuals over the age of 65 in the United States died from falls in 2019.
Parkour’s methods require practitioners to be well-acquainted with the scenarios that lead to falls, and to develop strategies to avoid them or creatively use such scenarios to traverse from one point to another.
At PK Move we’ve developed a curriculum that speaks directly to this issue with our PK Silver program, the world’s first evidence-based parkour program for older adults (50+).
